My favorite high school memory (well the funniest) was when Rhonda Winter was dating Larry Fassett and he lived across the street from the high school. She would go over at lunch time to visit (make-out) and one winter day she was walking back to the school and she slipped and fell on a patch of ice and slid halfway under a car in the parking lot. Well, she got up, wiped herself off, looked around, happy that no one had seen her fall. She walks into the school, the pay phone rings, and its Larry, "Don't think I didn't see you fall under that car!" Ahhh, good times (ha). --Paula Benson Rosenthal I remember when we were at Winegars and Ipulled Betsy Graham's chair out from under her and she fell on the floor. That was so mean, and I don't remember ever being a mean person. She must have done something to me first, but Ican't remember that part. The part I do remember is Mr. Luther should have been a professional baseball player because he swung that paddle really hard. I'm sorry Elizabeth. --Roger Colvin For me, I think there are two - the first was when I moved to Beaverton in '77, and the second was when I graduated. I hate to admit this, but I didn't like living in Beaverton at all when I moved there because I was really excited about going to high school with my friends in Connecticut; however, a slight twist of fate (namely my dad getting a job at the nuclear plant in Midland), we ended up in Beaverton just before my freshman year. Another twist of fate is that we were on our way to Gladwin to find a place to stay when my dad's car had mechanical problems, forcing us to stop in Beaverton for the night. My dad got a chance to walk around the town and decided that's where he wanted his kids to go to school. On the other end, graduation was a huge memory for me as well because I got a chance to get my diploma with a lot of really great people, some of whom became lifelong friends. Remember a drunken Howard Whiteman setting off the fire alarm just before the graduation ceremony? --Adam Bashaw Does anyone remember the senior trip when Allen Beech played house detective? (Janice) It was a great time. How about when the seniors played softball and they all had to sit on the bench? -- Doris Grady. My favorite memory was a play that we did sophomore year. Eric Pendleton played the prosecuting attorney, only a week before the play he got severe tonsillitis and they were afraid he'd need to have his tonsils removed. Since we lacked a stage anywhere in the school, we held the play in Mr. Devlin's room and slid open the partition to include the vending machine room. Scott Govitz was so nervous before the play and started sweating profusely...so much so that it was dripping off his makeup and we were tucking napkins into the collar of his shirt to keep it from staining. The very best, though, was watching Sandy Allaben try to dress like a prostitute. I brought in a cool purple, long dress that my mom had gotten for herself in Hawaii. Looked good on my mom, so I thought Sandy would be fine in it. OOPS. She wasn't ready to be seen dead in a halter-topped dress just yet. I played a Swedish maid named "Minnie", who wasn't Swedish at all. It was fun because I got to talk with a bad Swedish accent, then drop it in the big climactic scene. Maybe my second favorite memory was Kathy Jance and Brian Winton in Mr. Randall's class (not Government, might have been Psych, Soc or Econ). Brian was mercilessly picking on Kathy for coloring her hair. She was indignant that he would think such a thing. "I DO NOT COLOR MY HAIR, MR. WINTON. She looked around for an ally and we're all hiding our faces trying not to laugh. I won't embarass poor Kathy, but it just didn't seem fair that anyone's hair should be SOOOOO blonde all the time. Guess we were just jealous! -- Janis Nearing School days were pretty much all good. I remember stuff that used to bother us, like who liked who,who said what about who, etc. and how it meant EVERYTHING to us then. I would give anything to have only those worries now!! I remember funny stuff and great times at school! Remember the SCPG club, (sr. class party goers)? Sr. skip day...basketball/football games...when Mr. Randall said we were too wound up in Sociology class one day and said "tomorrow, run down to the river and back before you come in to class," so we did and he was pissed, (we even brought him a wet stick to prove we went!) He put us down as tardy anyway! I think it was Troy, maybe Heidi, (probably the worst thing she ever did at school, ha) Scott and myself. I also vaguely remember hitting Mike Midose and giving him a bloody nose in 2nd grade and being sent to the principal's office. Sorry, Mike, but you deserved it, you were teasing me because I had a dress on (on the merry-go-round) and you could see my underpants!! "I see London, I see France." Twenty times was more than I could handle!! Actually, that was probably the worst thing I ever did, and I am sorry! Other memories: running to the bathroom at the Jr. High during dances when someone you didn't want to dance with was coming towards you; how the tables were set up at the entrance of the dances so we had to wind through them and all the chaperones had to "sniff" for alcohol, etc. And us saying "hi" and holding our breaths real quick so we wouldn't get kicked out; having to change in gym class in Jr. High, and worrying about how all the other girls would look at you in your "training bra", when they were in a "B" size already!! Yeah, I still have to worry about that!! (HA)! -- Michele (Neville) Cameron My favorite movie memory is of "Airplane." It was the first of its kind and I just remember a whole group of us went and sat across a whole row of the theater. Smokey and the Bandit is also definitely a must see from that era! -- Paula Benson Rosenthal My favorite memory is the Delena's Advertisement....tell me, can you still remember the words? My first memory was at 6 years old...and "house of red blood" was my first Gem memory... -- Colleen Brown That Delena's ad kicked ass! "Hungry?" -- Adam Bashaw I think it's wonderful that so many of us still have enough active brain cells that we can all remember ALL OF THE WORDS TO OUR FAVORITE COMMERCIAL FROM "25" YEARS AGO. Oh those poor Reume girls!!!! -- Tammy (Cornell) Ibbetson .It goes way back to sixth grade at Winegars. I had Mrs. Hudson (at least I think that was her name) and we were in one of the portables. Anyway...Mrs. Hudson would let us bring in our 45 rpms and play them on the record player during recess. We would dance around the room and sing out loud. I especially remember Locomotion and forming a chain around the room. How is that for a "blast from the past"? By the way...what is the dress code for Saturday night? Formal, semi-casual, or is it anything goes? -- Terri Collins Roberson My most poignant memory from school is when we were riding with Annette Howe in her jeep after we all had been drinking, I think Steve Zunich and Craig Bergman were there as well,(foggy memory here), but I remember her driving us into a ditch, here is the scene Annette is behind the wheel I'm in the passanger seat Craig and Steve are are in the back. We are leaning at a 45 degree angle freeking out. Annette says causally don't worry this is a jeep it has four wheel drive, but I don't know how it' works. Then (foggy memory) I can picture his face and his car but can't remember his name. I think it was Steve? (he wore his hair in an affro), and he drove a light blue 2 door Chey Caprie, he pulls up at the same time with a jerk strap and he yanks us out. -- Bill Brushaber |
